What Plaimanas07 is

Plaimanas07 is an open-source Thai calligraphic typeface designed by Parin Rungpattarathakun in collaboration with Cadson Demak, released on GitHub in June 2025 under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 with Regular and Italic styles. It is a rarity in Thai open type: a face released explicitly for beauty rather than utility.

The designer’s own framing is direct. The typeface grew out of a personal investigation into how classical Thai calligraphy could inform contemporary digital type, and it targets what the documentation calls “the lack of Thai fonts with artistic elegance” — the gap left by a decade of open Thai releases optimised for screens and system UI.

One claim in the repository is worth repeating because it is so often untrue elsewhere: “All drawings are original. This is not a modification of an existing Thai typeface.” Plaimanas07 is not a re-weighted derivative. For the letterform tradition it draws on, see the Thai typography guide.

Character design and tone

Plaimanas07 renders Thai letterforms with calligraphic modulation — the thick-thin rhythm of a broad-nibbed hand — rather than the even monolinear stroke that most open Thai families use. That is the whole point of the face, and it is what separates it from the rest of the Cadson Demak catalogue, which is dominated by utility sans families.

Because the modulation carries the personality, the face rewards size. Set large it shows the pen logic clearly; set at body size the contrast thins out and the character it was built for disappears.

The tone is formal-artistic rather than casual: closer to a hand-lettered title or an invitation than to a note. Against Srisakdi it is more restrained, and against TH Charm of AU it is more contemporary in its detailing.

Weights and availability

Plaimanas07 ships as exactly two files — Plaimanas07-Regular.ttf and Plaimanas07-Italic.ttf — at Version 1.000; there is no weight axis and no variable build. The repository also provides OTF and webfont directories alongside the TTFs, and the sources are included, so the family can be rebuilt or extended by anyone.

Coverage spans both scripts: the Regular carries the full basic Latin alphabet and 87 codepoints across the Thai block, verified in the font’s own cmap. Download it from the GitHub repository.

Best use cases

Plaimanas07 is a display and occasion face — use it where Thai script is meant to be looked at, not read at length. Strong briefs:

• Titles, posters and cover lines that want calligraphic Thai character
• Invitations, certificates and ceremonial headings
• Cultural, heritage and arts branding
• Editorial display where the Thai script itself is the visual subject

Where it does not fit: body copy, UI labels, and dense data. Set the text in Anuphan or Sarabun and let Plaimanas07 carry the headline. If you need a handwriting face that survives small sizes instead, use BoonJot.

Licensing

Plaimanas07 is free for commercial use: it is published under the SIL Open Font License 1.1 with no Reserved Font Name, confirmed by the repository’s OFL.txt, GitHub’s declared licence, and the licence string embedded in the binary. The absence of a Reserved Font Name matters in practice — it means renamed derivatives are legally straightforward, the same condition that makes Anuphan usable as a base for modified builds.
