What ThaiGraph Condensed is

ThaiGraph Condensed is a free condensed loopless Thai+Latin sans-serif in four weights (Light 300, Regular 400, Medium 500, Bold 700), produced in-house by ThaiGraph as a condensed derivative of Anuphan by Cadson Demak, and released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The download on this page includes TTF files for desktop install, WOFF2 files for self-hosted web use, and the OFL license text — free for commercial work, no registration required.

The family exists because condensed cuts are close to nonexistent in free Thai type. Latin designers reach for a condensed grotesque the moment a headline runs tight; Thai designers have had no free equivalent, so headlines either shrink or track negative until the vowel marks collide. ThaiGraph Condensed narrows the letterforms themselves, keeping the marks where they belong.

Because it inherits Anuphan’s engineered skeleton — every Thai outline in the parent family was drawn from the Latin logic of IBM Plex Sans — the condensed cut keeps a single, even texture across mixed Thai-English headlines, which is where condensed type spends most of its life.

Why condensed Thai fonts are rare

None of the widely used free loopless Thai families ship a condensed width: Prompt has no condensed cut, Kanit has none, and Anuphan carries only a weight axis (100–700) with no width axis in its variable file. That absence is documented in each family’s Google Fonts metadata — see the Anuphan METADATA.pb for the single-axis declaration.

There is a structural reason. Thai stacks vowel signs and tone marks above and below the consonant line, so narrowing a Thai letterform is not a simple horizontal scale — the marks need room, and careless compression crushes ไม้โท into ascenders like ป and ฝ. Commercial Thai foundries sell condensed display faces to advertising agencies precisely because the drawing work is real. ThaiGraph Condensed does that work once and gives the result away under the OFL, alongside the rest of the free Thai fonts we cover.

Weights and files

ThaiGraph Condensed ships four static weights — Light (300), Regular (400), Medium (500), and Bold (700) — each provided as both TTF and WOFF2 in a single zip with the OFL license file. No italics and no variable file in this release.

The four-step range covers the condensed use case: Light for oversized editorial headlines, Regular and Medium for posters and packaging hierarchy, Bold for the hardest-working retail and campaign headlines. Weights above 700 are deliberately absent — extreme weight plus extreme narrowness is where Thai mark positioning breaks down.

Install is the same as any Thai font: unzip, then install the TTF files (right-click → Install on Windows, Font Book on macOS). Is ThaiGraph Condensed free for commercial use?

Yes. ThaiGraph Condensed is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits commercial use, embedding, modification, and redistribution at no cost — the same license that covers Anuphan itself. Client work, packaging, signage, webfonts, and app embedding are all allowed.

Derived from Anuphan — provenance and credit

ThaiGraph Condensed is a condensed derivative of Anuphan, the loopless Thai sans designed by Mint Tantisuwanna at Cadson Demak and published as open source under OFL-1.1 in the cadsondemak/Anuphan repository. We narrowed the family’s widths, rebuilt the spacing for condensed setting, and instanced four static weights from the original’s 100–700 weight range.

The OFL is what makes this legal and honest: it explicitly permits modified versions, provided they are renamed and remain under the same license. This family is renamed accordingly — it carries no “Anuphan” in its name — and the original copyright notice (“Copyright 2019 The Anuphan Project Authors”) stays in the shipped license file. The design credit belongs to Cadson Demak; the condensing is ours. If you need the original proportions, Anuphan remains free on Google Fonts in seven weights.

Best use cases

ThaiGraph Condensed is a display family for headlines, posters, packaging, and tight UI — anywhere Thai text must occupy less horizontal space without shrinking. Strong briefs:

• Poster and event headlines where a full-width loopless sans overflows the grid
• Packaging front-of-pack text on narrow formats — bottles, cans, sachets
• Editorial and campaign headlines in mixed Thai-English lockups
• Space-starved UI: navigation bars, data tables, mobile headers with long Thai labels
• Motion graphics lower-thirds where character count fights safe margins

Where it does not fit: long-form body text (condensed widths tire the eye — use Sarabun or another body face), and formal documents that expect looped letterforms. Browse the loopless category and the display category for the neighbouring options.

Pairings

ThaiGraph Condensed does its work at display sizes, so pair it with a normal-width text face rather than another condensed cut. Three combinations that hold:

• Anuphan — the parent family at text sizes gives a perfectly matched skeleton between headline and body
• Sarabun — looped Thai body text under condensed loopless headlines, the highest-contrast pairing
• Noto Serif Thai — editorial serif body when the condensed headline needs a literary counterweight

ThaiGraph Condensed is licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1: free for commercial use, modification, embedding, and bundling, provided the license file stays with the fonts and derivatives keep the OFL. The license text ships in the zip and is published at openfontlicense.org. The family is a renamed condensed derivative of Anuphan by Cadson Demak, whose copyright notice is preserved in the shipped OFL.txt.
