What PSL Omyim is

PSL Omyim (พีเอสแอล อมยิ้ม) is a commercial Thai display font from PSL SmartLetter with curved, rounded, flowing letterforms the foundry says were inspired by the shapes of lollipops and warm smiles — the Thai name อมยิ้ม plays on both meanings. First released in 2006, it is sold today in its updated retail form, PSL Omyim Pro.

PSL SmartLetter is a Bangkok foundry whose PSL font copyrights date back to 1995 and whose catalogue exceeds 100 fonts. It credits founder Phanlop Thongsuk, whose background spans font design, signboard writing, and book layout, and its store byline markets it as “The Font Company that sold to Apple.” The foundry’s legacy catalogue also lists a “PSL Omyim New” series built around the same design.

Within the Thai display font landscape, PSL Omyim sits at the soft, cheerful end of the spectrum — the counterpart to harder-edged advertising display faces. It shares a catalogue with PSL Kittithada, the foundry’s better-known workhorse.

Character design and tone

PSL Omyim is drawn to convey happiness, cuteness, and cheerfulness while remaining readable, per the foundry’s own design brief. Every stroke curves; the letterforms flow with the rounded softness of a candy shape rather than the straight stems and cut terminals of a corporate Thai sans.

That rounded silhouette is the entire personality of the font. Where a geometric display face projects confidence, PSL Omyim projects friendliness — the typographic equivalent of a smile on a package shelf. It reads as warm at large display sizes and keeps enough structure that short runs of text stay legible rather than dissolving into decoration.

The family ships with Latin glyphs alongside the Thai range, so bilingual packaging lockups and Thai-English logo work stay within one file. For the mechanics of setting Thai and Latin together, see our Thai typography guide.

Weights and availability

The current PSL Omyim Pro family contains four styles — Regular, Bold, Italic, and Bold Italic — sold on the official PSL SmartLetter web store at 300 baht per style or 500 baht for the family pack. That gives two weights (Regular and Bold), each with an italic companion.

The version history runs in two eras. The original PSL-Omyim fonts (Regular, Bold, Italic) were version 1.000, marked “2006 initial release”; the updated PSL Omyim Pro Regular is version 3.001, released July 2016. Purchase runs through the official product page.

PSL Omyim is not on Google Fonts and has no legal free download. Any “free download” of the font circulating outside the official store is unlicensed — PSL cites a NECTEC legal confirmation that its fonts are copyrighted software.

Best use cases

The foundry positions PSL Omyim for applications that need a soft, cute feel: packaging for cosmetics, skincare, baby products, school products, and maternity products, plus logos, social media graphics, and brand design. Strong briefs:

Where it doesn’t fit: body text at reading sizes, corporate identity work that needs authority, and open-source or no-budget projects — for those, free rounded-friendly alternatives like Mali, Itim, and Kodchasan cover similar cheerful territory under open licenses.

Pairings

PSL Omyim carries the display layer; pair it with a quiet, open-licensed Thai body sans so the cuteness stays a headline act. Three pairings:

Licensing

PSL Omyim is paid, per-user commercial software: one license covers one user or one computer, across three tiers — educational use, home/personal use, and commercial use (including print shops, sign shops, and organizations) — with license duration starting from one year. Verify current terms and pricing on the PSL SmartLetter licensing page before deploying in client work.

Because licensing is per-user and time-bound, agencies should budget seats per designer rather than treating a single purchase as a studio-wide asset. If the budget doesn’t support commercial licensing, the honest route is an open alternative: Mali, Itim, or Kodchasan for the cute display layer, with Sarabun as the body companion — all free for commercial use.
