What iannnnnJPG is

iannnnnJPG is a free looped Thai handwriting typeface drawn specifically for comic and manga captions, listed on f0nt.com on 20 January 2005 by Prachya Singhto, and the second most downloaded font of his 2005 series — its counter read 928,658 downloads when we checked it on 29 August 2026. One weight, Thai and Latin, free for commercial use.

Unlike almost everything else in the series, it exists to solve a stated problem rather than to be a doodle. The whole release note is an argument, and it is worth reading in full because there is nothing else like it in Thai freeware from this period. Its f0nt.com tags say the same thing in three words: manga, การ์ตูน (comics) and ลายมือ (handwriting).

It sits in the January cluster that opened the year. Of the sixteen releases f0nt.com lists under 2005, twelve are dated between 4 and 27 January — a three-week burst that produced three quarters of the year’s output, with JPG in the middle of it. The complete record is at iannnnn Thai fonts, and the designer is the person who founded that site: on the iannnnnUBC page he traces the line from his first font, made for a thesis, to “เว็บฟอนต์.ไอ้แอนนนนน และ ฟอนต์.คอมในที่สุด”.

The argument behind it: what Thai manga lettering lost

iannnnnJPG was made out of irritation at a specific publishing decision — that Thai-localised Japanese manga had switched from hand-lettered captions to stiff computer type, and lost something in the process. The designer’s note reads:

In English: this caption font was made because he was annoyed that Japanese comics here were being set in stiff computer fonts, which do not carry the feeling of the hand the way older comics did, where the Thai captions were written straight onto the paper with a pen — and those read with far more feeling.

That is a piece of design criticism, published in 2005, by the person who then went and fixed it himself. It is also a precise brief. A caption face for comics has to do three things at once: hold in a speech balloon at small size, survive being scaled and rotated by a letterer, and read as if a person wrote it rather than as if a machine set it. Everything about the drawing follows from that.

The historical claim underneath it is one this page will not overstate. He describes what he remembers of older Thai manga editions; we have not verified the lettering practice of any specific publisher or title, and we are not going to assert it on his behalf. The verified fact is the motive, in his own words, on his own release page.

What the letterforms actually do

iannnnnJPG is a rounded, evenly weighted looped Thai hand with small closed loops and an unhurried, upright rhythm — closer to careful printing than to fast cursive, which is exactly what caption lettering needs. Where iannnnnMTV is loud and mannered, JPG is quiet and consistent, and the difference is deliberate: one is a headline voice, the other is a reading voice inside a picture.

What a letterer notices:

• Even colour. The stroke weight barely varies, so a balloon set in it has no dark patches. That matters more in comics than in almost any other setting, because the balloon is a small white shape surrounded by drawn artwork and any weight change reads as a smudge.
• Small, tidy loops. The หัว is closed and modest rather than the large, dominant loop of MTV, so the counters do not fill in when the caption is reduced. That is the property that lets it work at balloon sizes.
• Latin drawn to match. 26 capitals, 26 lowercase and 10 Western digits with their own outlines, plus the Thai digits ๐–๙. Sound effects and numbers set in the same hand rather than dropping into a substitute face.
• Upright, not sloped. There is no italic and no oblique in this file. If your letterer wants an emphasis style, they have to fake it, and faking a slope on a looped Thai face distorts the loops before it distorts the stems.

Against modern equivalents: Mali, the Cadson Demak schoolchild hand, is the closest open-licence face in register and it is far better engineered. iannnnnJPG’s advantage is that it is a rougher, more genuinely hand-drawn shape — which is the point of the brief — and its disadvantage is everything in the next section.

What is actually inside the file

One TTF, one weight, no documentation, and one detail that settles a question about this whole series: the version string reads 2.000, not 1.000. Everything below was read from 2005_iannnnnJPG.ttf with fontTools 4.57.0, out of the archive the release page serves.

For a caption font, the OpenType line is not a footnote — it is the thing that will bite you. No font in the 2005 series declares a Thai script, so there is no mark-positioning feature and no alternate tone-mark form for a tall consonant such as ป, ฝ, ฟ or ฬ. Placement comes from the fixed geometry of the NP Naipol template. In practice that means it behaves identically everywhere — which is precisely why it was built that way in 2005 — but it will never adjust a tone mark to avoid a collision, and comic dialogue is full of exclamations that stack marks. Set your worst line, not your best one, in the Thai font tester before you letter a whole chapter in it. For running Thai text at length, take a face from free Thai fonts instead.

The file you download is not the January 2005 original

iannnnnJPG was listed on 20 January 2005, but the file f0nt.com serves today was created on 25 September 2005 and carries the version string “Version 2.000 2005 initial release” — it is the rebuild the designer announced, not the original. On the iannnnnISO page, posted at the start of 2006, he writes: “ป.ล. ใครเคยโหลดฟอนต์ไอ้แอนนนนน (2005) ไป ผมอัปเกรดและแก้ไขตำหนิมันเมื่อ 20 พ.ย.48 ครับ … ยังไงลบของเก่าทิ้งไปแล้วดูดของใหม่เข้าไปแทนโลด !!” — he upgraded the 2005 fonts and fixed their flaws on 20 November 2548, so delete the old ones and take the new ones.

The binary agrees with him twice: the creation date is eight months after the listing date, and the version number has moved to 2.000. Compare it with the font that closed the same year:

Two honest caveats. The designer dated his announcement 20 November 2005, and neither file carries a head timestamp later than mid-October, so read his date as when he announced the pass rather than when each binary was written. And nothing on f0nt.com describes what changed inside JPG between 1.000 and 2.000 — the version bump is evidence that it changed, not evidence of what changed. If you are matching an old print job set in a pre-2006 copy of this font, do not assume the metrics are identical.

Is iannnnnJPG free for commercial use?

Yes. The release page files iannnnnJPG under f0nt.com’s ใช้งานเชิงพาณิชย์ได้ฟรี category — free for commercial use — and the site licence answers the client-work question directly with “ได้จ้ะ เอาเลย”, go right ahead. That includes lettering a comic you intend to sell. No payment, no permission, no attribution requirement. The download button is preceded by one line of agreement: “ข้อตกลง: คลิกดาวน์โหลด = ยอมรับสัญญาอนุญาต” — clicking download is accepting the licence.

The category is defined on f0nt.com in one sentence: “ฟอนต์ที่ผู้สร้างสรรค์อนุญาตให้นำไปใช้ทำมาหากินได้”, fonts their creators permit to be used to earn a living. The designer says it in the first person in the bio that appears on every one of his release pages: “ฟอนต์จาก iannnnn แจกฟรีตลอดไป เอาไปใช้ทำมาหากินได้เลยครับ”.

Three restrictions are real, and they are tighter than the SIL Open Font License that covers most free Thai fonts:

• You may not sell the font file. Bundling it with a deliverable so the thing renders correctly is expressly allowed; selling the .ttf as the product is not. Shipping a print-ready comic with the font embedded in the PDF is the first case, not the second.
• You may not re-host it. Copying the file and offering it for download elsewhere is answered “ไม่ได้จ้ะ”. Descriptions and specimen images may be republished with attribution and a link back to the download page — which is why every download link on this site points at f0nt.com and never at a mirror.
• Modifying for redistribution needs permission. Private modification is fine, and letterers do modify caption faces. Modifying in order to sell or distribute the font onward requires the owner’s consent, with the NP Naipol Template named as the single exception.

The licence inside the file says the opposite

Open the TTF and its name table claims a restriction the website does not: nameID 13 reads “For educations used only.” That string is stale template boilerplate, and f0nt.com’s own precedence rule is what settles it. Here is every place a term for this font lives, and what weight each carries:

The site licence gives other terms priority only when they appear on the download page or in a document file attached to the font. The download page states the grant; the archive contains no document. The embedded string is neither of the two things that could displace it, and it travels with the template rather than with the author’s intent — the identical string sits in eighteen of the nineteen files in this series. On top of that, fsType is 8, so embedding a caption font in a print-ready PDF is permitted at the binary level too.

That is our reading of a genuine conflict, not legal advice. For a commercially published title, ask the designer through the f0nt.com forum, which the licence page points to.

Where to download iannnnnJPG

Download it from the iannnnnJPG release page on f0nt.com. That is the only source the licence permits, and the file you get is 2005_iannnnnJPG.zip, roughly 76 KB, containing one TTF.

Two practical notes for anyone scripting this:

• The button on the page points at https://www.f0nt.com/?dl_name=iannnnn/2005_iannnnnJPG.zip, which answers 302 and redirects to the stored archive under /wp-content/files/iannnnn/. Verified negative, against the common assumption: we requested that endpoint from a bare command line on 29 August 2026 with no Referer header and no browser User-Agent, and it served the full 75,979-byte zip. There is no hotlink protection to work around. Use the release page regardless — the redirect target is an undocumented implementation detail that can move without notice, and re-hosting or hot-linking the file breaks the licence in any case.
• There is no Google Fonts entry, no GitHub repository and no OFL text anywhere in this series. Any site offering an “iannnnnJPG free download” from its own server is re-hosting against the terms above.

To install: unzip, then right-click the .ttf and choose Install on Windows, or double-click and choose Install Font on macOS. For web use you would self-host and declare it with @font-face — permitted by fsType 8, but read the OpenType caveat above first, because a browser shaping Thai will get no help from this file.

Using it for comics and manga today

iannnnnJPG still does the job it was drawn for, provided you letter with it the way a letterer works — one balloon at a time, at final size, checking the marks. Where it fits:

• Speech balloons and caption boxes in Thai comics, webtoons and fan translations
• Handwritten narration and margin notes over artwork
• Children’s picture books and educational comics that want a written, informal voice
• Bilingual Thai/English lettering, since the Latin is drawn rather than substituted

Where it does not fit: long Thai body copy, UI, and any layout that leans on automatic tone-mark positioning. For a running text face under it, Sarabun is the standard open-licence choice; Noto Sans Thai Looped keeps the loops if you want the whole page to stay in one register. If you need the same feeling with real weights and a modern shaping table, the designer’s own iannnnn-HEN from 2025 is the direct upgrade path, and Mali is the open-licence alternative.

One workflow warning that is specific to comics. Because there is no thai OpenType script in this file, a tone mark over a tall consonant sits where the template put it and nowhere else. In a balloon set tight, that can collide with the balloon’s own outline. Letter at final size, and if you rotate or skew the text — which letterers do — recheck the marks afterwards, because nothing in the font will re-place them for you.

What “JPG” means — one of the few names in the series that fits

iannnnnJPG is one of the handful of names in the 2005 run where the acronym plausibly matches the design: a picture-file format for a picture-lettering font. But the designer never says so, and this page will not pretend otherwise.

The series uses one naming device throughout — the handle plus a three-letter uppercase acronym out of the media and technology vocabulary of 2005 Thailand. Some fit their designs: BMX is a child learning to ride a bicycle, TKO is a comic sound-effect face, CPU and AMD are both 8-bit. At least one is arbitrary and he admits it: on iannnnnSME he writes that he could not think of a name so he reused one like its twin’s. One is named after a letterform rather than a broadcaster: on iannnnnITV he writes “ตั้วชื่อว่า I เพราะตัว I มันยาวดี”, named I because the letter I is nicely long.

For JPG specifically there is no published statement of intent. The fit is obvious; the source is absent. Treat it as an inference, which is what it is.
