What TH Mali Grade 6 is
TH Mali Grade 6 is the schoolchild-handwriting member of Thailand’s 13 National Fonts — a playful, hand-drawn Thai face in four styles, designed by Sudarat Leotsithong and released free in 2007 by SIPA and the Department of Intellectual Property. The name (มะลิ, “jasmine”) and “Grade 6” nod to the tidy penmanship of a Thai primary-school pupil, and the “TH” prefix marks it as part of the royalty-free government set.
Among thirteen mostly sober document faces, Mali Grade 6 is the warm, friendly outlier. It reads like careful handwriting from a schoolbook — even, rounded, and approachable — which is exactly why it turns up on classroom worksheets, children’s material and any layout that wants to feel human rather than official.

Character design and tone
TH Mali Grade 6 imitates neat Thai pupil’s handwriting: rounded, even strokes, gently informal consonant heads, and an unhurried, friendly rhythm. During development its capitals were enlarged and its letter-heads standardised, which keeps the handwritten charm while making the face consistent enough to set as type.
The loops sit softly rather than mechanically, and the whole face carries a light, cheerful tone. Set at body sizes it stays readable in short runs; pushed larger it reads unmistakably as friendly handwriting. Thai vowels and tone marks keep the same relaxed hand so the illusion holds across a line.
The tone is warm and unofficial — the opposite register to Sarabun. It signals approachability, which is its entire reason for existing inside an otherwise formal font set.
