What iannnnnSOS is

iannnnnSOS is a free Thai handwriting display face by Prachya Singhto (ปรัชญา สิงห์โต), listed on f0nt.com on 27 January 2005 and free for commercial use. It ships one weight, covers Thai and Latin, and its whole character is a stroke that keeps breaking and being gone over again — the mark of a ballpoint that will not take ink.

It is the fourth most downloaded font of the seventeen-strong iannnnn 2005 series. The counter on its release page read โหลด 607,198 ครั้ง on 29 August 2026 — 607,198 downloads, behind only iannnnnMTV, iannnnnJPG and iannnnnGMO. That is a live meter and it will have moved since.

The date matters more than it looks. Twenty-seven January 2005 puts this font five weeks into the life of f0nt.com, which registered its domain on 19 December 2004, and the designer who drew it is the same person who founded and still runs that site. So iannnnnSOS is not a font that happened to be published on the main channel for independent Thai type; it is part of that channel’s own first-year output. The Thai type foundries map sets out where that independent layer sits against the commercial catalogues.

Why iannnnnSOS looks the way it does, in the designer’s own words

The face is a direct trace of a failing ballpoint pen, and the designer says so on the release page — it is the third font he taught himself to make in FontCreator, and it came out of the annoyance of writing with a pen that would not lay down ink. His description, quoted as printed:

In English: this is the third font he practised making in FontCreator; it came from the irritation of using a lousy ballpoint that would not take on paper, having to keep rubbing, dragging and going back over the stroke, until the letters came out looking like they were calling the neighbours for help — and, he adds in brackets, he personally likes it.

Two things in that sentence are worth more than most of what is written about this series. The first is that he names the tool: FontCreator, a Windows editor, not FontLab and not Fontographer. The second is that he names the physical source of the texture. A great many Thai display faces from this period look distressed because distress was fashionable. This one looks distressed because he was describing a specific failure of a specific pen, and the ragged, doubled, re-gone-over stroke is a record of that. Is the name SOS explained anywhere?

No, and it should not be invented. f0nt.com publishes no naming explanation for iannnnnSOS, but the last line of its own release post is the closest thing to one, and it is his sentence, not ours. He writes that the letters ended up looking like they were ขอความช่วยเหลือชาวบ้าน — asking the neighbours for help. He does not then say “so I called it SOS”, and this page will not put that in his mouth.

The wider pattern across the series is uniform: the designer’s handle plus a three-letter uppercase acronym out of the media-and-technology vocabulary of 2005 Thailand. Some fit their designs obviously; at least one is arbitrary by his own written admission; for most of them, including SOS, there is no published explanation at all. Any listicle that tells you these fonts are named after broadcasters or brands is filling a gap with a guess. The full accounting is on the iannnnn foundry hub.

What the letterforms actually do

iannnnnSOS is looped Thai — every consonant that should carry a หัว carries one — but the loops are small, often barely closed, and set on a stroke of uneven density. That combination is what gives it a texture nothing else in the series has: it reads as handwriting under stress rather than as handwriting in a hurry.

The gap between the two ascender-descender pairs is the practical detail. The hhea box is far taller than the typographic one because Thai needs vertical room above and below the baseline for stacked vowels and tone marks, and a 2005 face solved that by simply making the box big. Set iannnnnSOS at a tight leading in a modern layout tool and the lines will feel further apart than the point size suggests. Type your own line into the Thai font tester before you commit to a grid.

Against its siblings: iannnnn-DOG from 2021 is the tidy, controlled version of the same hand, and iannnnn-HEN from 2025 is the cheerful one. SOS is neither. Against Purisa, the TLWG handwriting face most Thai Linux users know, SOS is looser and much rougher; against Charmonman it is not calligraphic at all. Thai script coverage, and the OpenType caveat that matters in 2026

The Thai coverage is complete — every assigned codepoint from U+0E01 to U+0E5B is in the cmap with zero gaps, all ten Thai digits ๐–๙ included — but the font declares no Thai OpenType script at all, and that is the single most important thing to know before using it. GSUB registers only latn, with liga. GPOS registers only latn, with kern. There is no thai script in either table, no Thai mark-positioning feature, and no alternate tone-mark forms for tall consonants.

What holds Thai together in this font instead is fixed geometry. The combining marks are drawn where they sit and given zero advance width — U+0E31 ไม้หันอากาศ, U+0E34 สระอิ, U+0E38 สระอุ, U+0E48 ไม้เอก and U+0E49 ไม้โท all measure 0 — so they overlay the preceding consonant by construction rather than by shaping. That is the NP Naipol template at work; the file credits it in nameID 10, This font used : NP NaipolTemplate : Version 2.000, alongside thanks to B513DS!GN (Ekaluck Peanpanawate) and a named staff list.

In 2005 that fixed geometry was the innovation — it was what made a Thai font behave the same in Photoshop and in Microsoft Word. In 2026 it is a limitation with two visible consequences:

• Tone marks over tall consonants sit at one height only. There is no substitution to lower ไม้เอก over ป, ฝ, ฟ or ฬ, so collisions in those combinations are drawn in, not fixable by the shaper.
• The GDEF table is malformed. Its GlyphClassDef uses ClassDef format 0, which is not a valid OpenType format — the spec defines formats 1 and 2 — and fontTools reports Unknown ClassDef format: 0 on load. Most rendering engines ignore GDEF here and carry on, but a strict font-validation or subsetting pipeline may object.

Treat iannnnnSOS as display type: headlines, captions, short lines. For running Thai text in an engine that expects modern shaping, use one of the free Thai fonts drawn for the job.

The file you download is the November 2005 rebuild, not the January original

iannnnnSOS was listed on 27 January 2005, but the TTF served today was created on 3 November 2005 and last modified on 4 November 2005 — the designer rebuilt the whole series that autumn and said so in public. Its version string reads Version 2.000 2005 initial release, which is the template generation, not the post date.

His note is on the iannnnnISO release page:

Anyone who downloaded the 2005 fonts earlier should delete them and take the new ones, because he upgraded them and fixed their flaws on 20 November 2548 — which in the Common Era is 2005. The binary timestamps agree with him. If you have a copy of this font sitting in an old project folder from before that, it is not the file f0nt.com serves now. iannnnnTKO is the one font listed before the rebuild that still ships its January original, and its file is measurably different because of it. iannnnnMTV also escaped the rebuild, but only because it was first built in October 2005, after the pass had already started.

Is iannnnnSOS free for commercial use?

Yes. The release page carries f0nt.com’s ใช้งานเชิงพาณิชย์ได้ฟรี badge — free for commercial use — and the site licence answers the commercial question directly: ได้จ้ะ เอาเลย, go right ahead. The badge links the site’s commercial-use category, defined there as ฟอนต์ที่ผู้สร้างสรรค์อนุญาตให้นำไปใช้ทำมาหากินได้ — fonts their creators permit to be used to earn a living. The release page also states the mechanism plainly: ข้อตกลง: คลิกดาวน์โหลด = ยอมรับสัญญาอนุญาต, clicking download means accepting the licence.

The designer says it in the first person in the bio shown on every one of his release pages: ฟอนต์จาก iannnnn แจกฟรีตลอดไป เอาไปใช้ทำมาหากินได้เลยครับ — fonts from iannnnn are free forever, go and use them to make a living.

Three restrictions are real, and they are tighter than the SIL Open Font License that covers most free Thai fonts:

• You may not sell the font file. ไม่อนุญาตให้นำ ‘ไฟล์ฟอนต์’ ไปขาย เว้นแต่จะเป็นการแนบไฟล์ติดไป…แต่ไม่ใช่เพื่อการขายฟอนต์เป็นหลัก — bundling the file so a deliverable renders is fine; selling the font as the product is not.
• You may not re-host it. Asked whether you can copy the files and offer them for download elsewhere, the licence answers ไม่ได้จ้ะ. Descriptions and specimen images may be republished with a link back to the download page. That is why the download link on this page points at f0nt.com and never at a mirror.
• Modifying for redistribution needs permission. Private modification is allowed; modifying in order to distribute onward requires the owner’s consent.

One honest complication, because it is in the file you download. The name table’s licence field, nameID 13, reads For educations used only. — which is not what the website says. That string travels with the NP Naipol template credited two fields above it in the same file, and f0nt.com’s licence gives other terms priority only when they appear on the download page or in a document bundled with the font. The download page states the grant, and the archive contains nothing but the TTF. Our reading is that the release-page grant governs; fsType is 8, Editable embedding, so document embedding and webfont conversion are permitted at the binary level too. Where to download iannnnnSOS

Download it from the iannnnnSOS release page on f0nt.com — that is the only source the licence permits anyone to point you at. The page’s button resolves to https://www.f0nt.com/?dl_name=iannnnn/2005_iannnnnSOS.zip and redirects to the file itself. Downloaded on 29 August 2026 it delivered a 62,597-byte archive containing exactly one file, 2005_iannnnnSOS.ttf.

There is no licence document in the archive — no LICENSE, no OFL.txt, no README. The terms live on the release page and on f0nt.com’s licence page, not in the zip. Install it the ordinary way: unzip, then right-click the .ttf and choose Install on Windows, or double-click and choose Install Font in Font Book on macOS.

What to pair iannnnnSOS with

Use it for the loud line and set everything else in a text face — a rough single-weight hand cannot carry a hierarchy on its own. It suits:

• posters, flyers and gig art that want urgency rather than polish
• comic and zine lettering, especially shouted or strained dialogue
• packaging and merchandise with a handmade, anti-corporate register
• titles for student work, campaigns and anything deliberately unglossy

Where it does not fit: body text, UI, forms, government and corporate documents, and anything set below roughly 18 px, where the broken stroke stops reading as texture and starts reading as a rendering fault. Set the running text in Sarabun — the standard open-licence Thai body face — and let SOS take only the headline.

For a smoother hand from the same designer, iannnnn-DOG and iannnnn-HEN are both modern multi-weight families. For more impact and less legibility, iannnnnTKO is the sound-effect face from the same month.
