What iannnnnDVD is
iannnnnDVD is a free Thai handwriting typeface listed on f0nt.com on 19 January 2005 by Prachya Singhto — the designer behind the iannnnn handle — and it ships one Regular weight covering the full Thai alphabet plus Latin. It is a thin, wide, looped hand with a deliberately loose rhythm, and on the day we checked its release-page counter had recorded 479,963 downloads.
The face belongs to the iannnnn 2005 series, the seventeen-font run that was f0nt.com’s own first year of output by the person who founded the site. Nothing about it is institutional. It is a hand that was drawn quickly, released the same month, and then downloaded roughly half a million times over twenty-one years.
f0nt.com’s own tags for the page are the fastest summary of its register: ชุ่ย (slapdash), น่ารัก (cute), ลายมือ (handwriting), วัยรุ่น (teen), อนุบาล (kindergarten) and เด็ก (childlike). Only one of those six is a compliment about craft, and the designer would be the first to agree.
The five-minute font, in the designer’s own words
The most useful thing anyone can say about iannnnnDVD is what its designer says on the release page: he drew it in about five minutes, as a conscript soldier, after morning PT, paying no attention to spacing or size — and it became the most popular font on his old site. The passage in full:
(“An emergency handwriting font, the fastest-made font in the world! I made it while I was a conscript in the company. I woke up, went for the morning run, then opened the machine and just wrote. Done. It took about five minutes. I paid no attention to spacing or size whatsoever. But somehow it ended up the most popular font on the ฟอนต์.ไอ้แอนนนนน.คอม site — the old one.”)
Two claims sit inside that. The five minutes is unverifiable and always will be; we report it as his statement, not as fact. The popularity is not. Reading the counters on all twelve January 2005 release pages on the same day, DVD ranks fifth — behind iannnnnJPG at 928,658, iannnnnGMO at 830,409, iannnnnSOS at 607,198 and iannnnnTKO at 555,277, and ahead of its tidier twin iannnnnHBO at 425,023. These are live meters and will have moved since.
The ไม่สนใจช่องไฟ — no attention to spacing — is the part you can actually check, and the file agrees with him. See the measurements below.
What the letterforms actually do
iannnnnDVD is a monoline looped hand with an unusually wide set and a stroke about three per cent of the em, drawn with heavily curved outlines: across the 46 base consonants the file uses 6,308 points in 115 contours, and 73.8 per cent of those points are off-curve control points. That last number is the technical signature of a fluid, traced pen stroke rather than a constructed letterform, and it is what separates DVD from its sibling iannnnnHBO, which uses barely a third as many curve points.
The measurements below all come from the shipped TTF, read with fontTools, at the file’s own 2048 units per em:
| Property | iannnnnDVD | What it means on the page |
|---|---|---|
| Mean consonant advance | 838 units | Wide. A line of Thai set in DVD runs about 5 per cent longer than the same line in HBO |
| Advance spread | 680–1140, s.d. 106 | Genuinely irregular widths — the “no attention to spacing” is visible in the data |
| Word space | 690 units | Very wide for a text-sized face; words float apart |
| Stroke weight | roughly 3 per cent of the em | Thin. Hairline at small sizes |
| Cap height / x-height | 953 / 715 | Latin caps sit low relative to the em |
| Default line box | 1709 up, 618 down = 1.14 em | Set solid, DVD still leads itself loosely |
The practical consequence of that last row catches people out. Set iannnnnDVD and iannnnnHBO at the same point size in the same text frame and DVD will occupy about 17 per cent more vertical space by default, because its ascent and descent values are drawn to clear a much taller mark stack. If you are swapping one for the other in an existing layout, expect every line break to move.
The Latin is not an afterthought — 26 uppercase, 26 lowercase and 10 Western digits are drawn as separate outlines rather than borrowed — but it is a casual, slightly backslanted hand, and the capitals in particular read as sketch lettering. Test your own bilingual string in the Thai font tester before committing.
How iannnnnDVD handles Thai script
iannnnnDVD is a looped face: every consonant that should carry a หัว carries one, drawn as a small tight circle rather than an open curl, which puts it in the looped Thai fonts set alongside the rest of the 2005 handwriting run. Coverage is complete — every assigned Unicode codepoint from U+0E01 to U+0E5B is in the character map with no gaps, including the Thai digits ๐๑๒๓๔๕๖๗๘๙, which many free handwriting faces of this era skipped.
Mark placement is where a 2005 file behaves like a 2005 file, and it needs saying plainly. iannnnnDVD declares no thai OpenType script at all. Its GSUB table registers only latn with a liga feature and its GPOS registers only latn with kern. There is no Thai mark-positioning feature and there are no alternate low-form tone marks. Every above-mark is a zero-advance glyph sitting at one fixed height, inherited from the NP Naipol template the file was built on.
That works for the common case and fails predictably in two places. Type ป่ ฝ่ ฟ้ ฬ๊ and the tone mark lands on the ascender of the tall consonant rather than clearing it; type ญุ ฐู and the below-vowel overlaps the เชิง, the descending foot. We rendered both strings from the shipped file to confirm it rather than assuming. It is not a defect to be fixed by an update — it is what the whole series does, and any page telling you these fonts have modern Thai shaping has not opened the file.
One more thing the binary shows: the GDEF table is present but its glyph class definition uses ClassDef format 0, which is not a valid OpenType format. Font tooling reports it as unknown and ignores it. In practice nothing depends on it here, because there is no Thai positioning to drive.
What “DVD” means — and what it does not
There is no published explanation for the name iannnnnDVD, and this page is not going to invent one. Across the release page, the designer’s index and the interviews he has given, we found no statement connecting any of these three-letter names to the media brands they resemble.
What can be said accurately is that the whole 2005 run uses one naming device: the handle, closed up, plus a three-letter uppercase acronym borrowed from the technology-and-broadcast vocabulary of mid-2000s Thailand. Some are semantically apt — iannnnnBMX is described as the handwriting of a kindergarten child วัยกำลังหัดขี่จักรยาน, at the age of learning to ride a bicycle; iannnnnTKO is ฟอนต์เจ็บ!, a face for comic impact sounds. At least one is arbitrary by the designer’s own admission: on the iannnnnSME page he writes “นึกชื่อไม่ออกเลยเอาชื่อคล้ายๆ กันนี่แหละ” — he could not think of a name, so he reused one close to its twin’s. And iannnnnITV is named for a letterform, not a broadcaster: “ตั้วชื่อว่า I เพราะตัว I มันยาวดี”, named I because the letter I is nicely long.
DVD is in neither of those groups. It has no gloss anywhere. Treat listicles that confidently explain it as fabrication.
The file you download today is not the January 2005 original
The release page lists iannnnnDVD as 19 January 2005, but the TTF inside the current archive reports head.created 21 September 2005 and head.modified 22 September 2005 — eight months after the listing date. The version string in the file reads Version 2.000 2005 initial release, and every other file in the 2005 run except iannnnnTKO shows the same autumn clustering — all eighteen of them created between 20 September and 4 November 2005.
The designer accounts for a revision pass himself. On the iannnnnISO page, his first release of 2006, he adds:
ป.ล. ใครเคยโหลดฟอนต์ไอ้แอนนนนน (2005) ไป ผมอัปเกรดและแก้ไขตำหนิมันเมื่อ 20 พ.ย.48 ครับ ดังนั้นตัวไหนที่โหลดไปก่อนอาจจะมีไม่สมบูรณ์อยู่บ้าง ยังไงลบของเก่าทิ้งไปแล้วดูดของใหม่เข้าไปแทนโลด !!
(“PS: anyone who downloaded the iannnnn 2005 fonts — I upgraded them and fixed their flaws on 20 November 2548. So whichever ones you took earlier may be somewhat incomplete. Delete the old ones and suck down the new ones instead.”)
We are stating both dates rather than merging them, because they do not match. พ.ศ. 2548 is 2005, so his announced fix-up is 20 November 2005; the DVD file’s own timestamps are September 2005. Either the file was rebuilt more than once that autumn, or a later timestamp was not written. What is certain is the thing that matters to a user: the archive served today is a rebuilt file, not the one posted in January 2005, and if you have an old copy sitting in a font folder the designer’s own instruction is to delete it and take the current one.
The licence, in plain terms
iannnnnDVD is free to download and free to use commercially. The release page carries f0nt.com’s ใช้งานเชิงพาณิชย์ได้ฟรี badge — free for commercial use — twice, and the site licence answers the commercial question directly: “ได้จ้ะ เอาเลย”, go right ahead. The grant on the licence page reads:
(“You may download the fonts and use them free of charge. But where the font’s owner sets out any other terms — shown on the font’s download page, or as a document file attached to the font — those terms take precedence.”)
That precedence rule matters here, so we checked it: the download page sets no additional terms beyond the badge, and the zip contains no licence document at all. The archive is 67,353 bytes and holds exactly one file, 2005_iannnnnDVD.ttf. There is no LICENSE, no readme, nothing. So the site default governs.
Three restrictions are real, and they are stricter than the SIL Open Font License that covers most free Thai fonts:
- You may not sell the font file. Bundling it with a deliverable so the thing renders correctly is expressly allowed; selling the font as the product is not.
- You may not re-host it. The FAQ answers that with a flat “ไม่ได้จ้ะ”. Descriptions and specimen images may be republished with attribution and a link back to the download page — which is why every download button on ThaiGraph points at f0nt.com and never at a copy.
- Modifying for redistribution needs permission. Private modification is fine. Modifying it to hand on to someone else is not, without the owner’s consent.
One honest wrinkle you should know about before a client’s legal team finds it. The embedded nameID 13 licence string inside the TTF reads For educations used only. — which contradicts the site’s commercial grant. That string is template boilerplate: nameID 10 in the same file credits NP NaipolTemplate : Version 2.000, and the string travels with the template rather than with this designer’s intent. The rights holder is also the person who operates the distribution channel, and his current bio on every release page says “ฟอนต์จาก iannnnn แจกฟรีตลอดไป เอาไปใช้ทำมาหากินได้เลยครับ” — iannnnn fonts are free forever, go ahead and use them to earn a living. The publisher’s current explicit grant governs; the embedded string is stale 2005 metadata. For how Thai licence tiers differ generally, read the Thai font licensing guide.
The file’s embedding permission is not ambiguous: fsType is 8, editable embedding, so document embedding and webfont conversion are permitted at the binary level.
Where to download iannnnnDVD
Take it from the iannnnnDVD release page on f0nt.com. That page is the only source the licence permits, and it is the only one that serves the rebuilt file. Click the download button on the page rather than trying to hot-link the archive. Not because the endpoint stops you — we checked on 29 August 2026 and it serves the zip to a bare request with no Referer and no browser User-Agent — but because the f0nt.com licence forbids re-hosting the files, and the redirect target is an undocumented path that can move without notice.
You get a single zip containing one TrueType file. There is no OTF, no variable version, no webfont build and no second weight — the family is one Regular and always has been. If you need .woff2 for a site, you are converting it yourself, which fsType 8 permits.
Mirrors of this font exist on font-aggregator sites. Two reasons not to use them: the licence expressly forbids re-hosting, and the copies in circulation are frequently the pre-rebuild January 2005 file the designer told people to delete.
What to pair with iannnnnDVD
iannnnnDVD is a title and accent face, not a text face — pair it with a neutral looped or loopless Thai family that carries the reading load. The spacing irregularity that gives it charm at 40 pt makes it tiring at 11 pt, and the hairline stroke starts breaking up in print well before that.
- Sarabun — the default open-licence Thai body face, with a weight range wide enough to build a whole hierarchy underneath a DVD headline.
- Anuphan — a cleaner, more contemporary loopless sans if you want the contrast between hand and machine to be obvious.
- iannnnnHBO — from the same designer, the same month, and the same template. HBO is the tidy version of the same handwriting and holds together at small sizes where DVD does not, so the pair works as display-plus-caption within one voice.
For the wider field it competes in, see handwritten Thai fonts — DVD sits at the loosest end of it.
Briefs it suits: student and youth-facing material, kids’ and kindergarten graphics, informal social posts, packaging that wants to look drawn rather than set, and anything nostalgic about the mid-2000s Thai web. Briefs it does not: long body text, UI, official documents, and anything that needs to look considered — the whole point of the face is that it is not.
iannnnnDVD, the other iannnnn fonts, and the 2005 context
The 2005 series is not the same thing as the animal series most people meet first, and the two look nothing alike. ThaiGraph publishes iannnnn-HEN and iannnnn-COW from the later run — multi-weight faces from 2021 onward, drawn with modern tools and modern licences. The 2005 fonts are single-weight, template-built, and in a different technical era entirely.
The connective tissue between the two is documented rather than assumed. On the iannnnnGMO page the designer states he was trying to make something as good as CordiaUPC Bold and that GMO’s 2025 successor is iannnnn-HEN — so the animal series is a direct continuation of this work, twenty years later, by the same hand. The whole record, all seventeen releases with dates, counts and licence terms, sits on the iannnnn foundry hub.
For where independent publishing sits against the commercial Thai foundries, see the Thai type foundries guide. If iannnnnDVD makes you think a five-minute handwriting font is within reach, it is — how to make a Thai font covers the routes, including the ones that take rather longer than five minutes.
Name variants and spellings
These all point at the same typeface, and any of them should land you here:
- iannnnnDVD — the name on the release page and in the font’s own name table
- iannnnn DVD / iannnnn-DVD — spaced and hyphenated forms; the 2005 series is closed up, the later animal series is hyphenated
- 2005_iannnnnDVD — the filename, and the family name stored inside the TTF
- ฟอนต์ iannnnnDVD — the Thai-language search
- ไอ้แอนนนนน DVD — the Thai reading of the handle, from the designer’s old site name
- iannnnnDVD font download / โหลดฟอนต์ iannnnnDVD — the release page is the download page
- iannnnn 5 / iannnnn5 — a common miscount of the five n’s; the handle has exactly five
There is no bold, italic, condensed or variable cut of this face. If a download promises “iannnnnDVD Bold”, it is not from the designer.
Frequently asked questions about iannnnnDVD
Is iannnnnDVD free for commercial use?
Yes — iannnnnDVD is free for both personal and commercial use. You can use it in client work, apps, products, and websites at no cost, and self-host or embed it. The only OFL condition is that you don’t sell the font files on their own.
