What iannnnnHBO is
iannnnnHBO is a free Thai handwriting typeface listed on f0nt.com on 19 January 2005 by Prachya Singhto, and it is the neat one — the designer’s own hand written carefully rather than quickly, in a single Regular weight covering the full Thai alphabet plus Latin. On the day we checked, its release-page counter read 425,023 downloads.
f0nt.com files it under four tags and every one of them is about restraint: คัดลายมือ (penmanship practice), บรรจง (carefully formed), ลายมือ (handwriting) and เรียบร้อย (tidy). That is a different proposition from most of the iannnnn 2005 series, which trades on looseness. HBO is the member of the run you can set a paragraph in.
The designer’s description says exactly that, and adds a confession:
ฟอนต์ลายมือผมเองในเวอร์ชันเรียบร้อย ถ้าเอามาเขียนข้อความเป็นตัวเล็กๆ จิ๋วๆ เวลาพรนินต์ออกมาเป็นกระดาษแล้วสวยดี แต่ความจริงคือเป็นลายมือที่เกร็งมั่กๆ ขอบอก (ฟอนต์ตัวที่สองในชีวิตครับ)
(“My own handwriting in a tidy version. If you set small, tiny text in it and print it on paper it looks good. But the truth is it is very tense handwriting, I have to say. It is the second font of my life.”)
”The second font of my life” — where HBO sits in the sequence
That parenthesis is the most useful dating evidence in the whole 2005 series, because it fixes the order from inside the posts rather than from a listing page. iannnnnUBC, listed 12 January 2005, is described on its own page as the first font he ever made — taught to himself for a thesis submission, which led to the fonts.iannnnn site and then to f0nt.com. HBO is listed seven days later and calls itself the second. The two statements corroborate each other and the index’s ordering at once.
That matters because f0nt.com moved to WordPress in 2009 and no release page exposes a machine-readable publication date. Anywhere else on this cluster we describe a date as “listed”, because that is all it is. Here the sequence is independently confirmed by the designer’s own words.
It also frames what HBO is. It is a beginner’s second font, made by a self-taught architecture student a week after his first, on a shared community template — and it has been downloaded more than four hundred thousand times. That combination is the whole argument for taking the 2005 series seriously.
What the letterforms actually do
iannnnnHBO is a monoline looped hand drawn almost entirely with straight segments: across the 46 base consonants the file uses 3,534 points in 113 contours and only 25.8 per cent of them are off-curve control points. Its sibling iannnnnDVD, listed the same day by the same designer on the same template, uses 6,308 points at 73.8 per cent off-curve for the same 46 letters. The two files are built in opposite ways.
You can see that in the rendering. HBO’s curves are polygonal approximations, its baseline is level, its stroke barely modulates, and the loops are drawn as small even circles. It reads less like handwriting than like a careful upright sans that happens to have been drawn by hand — which is what คัดลายมือ, copybook penmanship, actually means. The designer’s word for it, เกร็ง (tensed up), is a fair description of the geometry as well as the mood.
Measured from the shipped TTF at its 2048 units per em, next to DVD for scale:
| Property | iannnnnHBO | iannnnnDVD |
|---|---|---|
| Outline points, 46 consonants | 3,534 (25.8% off-curve) | 6,308 (73.8% off-curve) |
| Mean consonant advance | 799 units | 838 units |
| Advance spread | 614–1174, s.d. 113 | 680–1140, s.d. 106 |
| Word space | 500 units | 690 units |
| Stroke weight | roughly 4 per cent of the em | roughly 3 per cent of the em |
| Default line box | 1416 up, 580 down = 0.97 em | 1709 up, 618 down = 1.14 em |
| Kerning pairs | 72 | 5 |
Two rows there decide real layouts. The word space is 500 units against DVD’s 690, so HBO sets noticeably tighter and looks composed rather than scattered. And the default line box is under one em, which means HBO set solid at 16 pt takes less vertical space than most Thai text faces — you will usually want to add leading manually rather than trusting the font’s own metrics.
The 72 kerning pairs against DVD’s 5 is the clearest evidence that HBO was finished rather than dashed off. It is still a small kern table by any modern standard, and it only applies to Latin, but somebody sat down with it.
Can you really set small text in iannnnnHBO?
Largely yes, and that is unusual for a 2005 free handwriting face — we set the same Thai line in both faces from 11 pt upward and HBO’s loops stayed open and its rhythm stayed even where DVD went spidery and irregular. The designer’s claim about printing small holds up better than most designer claims do.
The honest limits are worth stating anyway:
- The stroke is still a hairline. At roughly 4 per cent of the em it is thinner than a text face like Sarabun Regular. On coated stock or a laser printer it survives; on newsprint or a low-resolution screen it will thin out.
- There is one weight. No bold, so emphasis inside a paragraph has to come from another family. The designer solved this himself later: iannnnnMTV, from October 2005, is explicitly his handwriting drawn bold เผื่อใครเอาไปย่อเล็กๆ แล้วเส้นจะได้ไม่บางเกินไป — so the strokes would not get too thin when scaled down.
- The mark positioning is fixed geometry, and at small sizes over tall consonants that shows. See the next section.
So: captions, short paragraphs, quotations, worksheet text, packaging copy. Not a novel. Compare it against your own copy in the Thai font tester before deciding.
How iannnnnHBO handles Thai script
iannnnnHBO is a looped face — every consonant that should carry a หัว has one, drawn as a small even circle — and its Thai coverage is complete, with every assigned codepoint from U+0E01 to U+0E5B in the character map and no gaps, including the Thai digits ๐๑๒๓๔๕๖๗๘๙. That puts it in the looped Thai fonts set, and the complete digit set is more than many free handwriting faces of the period bothered with.
Mark placement is 2005 technology and needs stating plainly. No thai OpenType script is declared anywhere in the file. GSUB registers only latn with liga; GPOS registers only latn with kern. There is no Thai mark-positioning feature, and no alternate lowered forms of the tone marks. Every above-mark is a zero-advance glyph parked at one fixed height, inherited from the NP Naipol template credited in the file’s own name table.
The result is correct for the common case and predictably wrong in two places, which we rendered from the shipped file rather than assumed:
- Over a tall consonant — ป่ ฝ่ ฟ้ ฬ๊ — the tone mark lands on the ascender instead of clearing it. With ป๋ the mark and the stem cross.
- Under a consonant with a เชิง — ญุ ฐู — the below-vowel overlaps the descending foot.
This is the state of the art for a Thai font in January 2005, not a bug introduced later, and it is uniform across the series. It is also the single most useful thing to know before using one of these files as a webfont: nothing in the layout tables will fix the stacks for you.
One more finding from the binary, for completeness. GDEF is present but its glyph class definition uses ClassDef format 0, which is not a valid OpenType format; font tooling reports it as unknown and skips it. Nothing here depends on it, because there is no Thai positioning to drive.
What “HBO” means — and what it does not
There is no published explanation for the name iannnnnHBO, and this page will not manufacture one. Nothing on the release page, the designer’s index or the interviews he has given connects it to the broadcaster it resembles.
What is documented is the naming device the whole run uses: the handle, closed up, plus a three-letter uppercase acronym out of the technology-and-broadcast vocabulary of mid-2000s Thailand. A few have an explanation. iannnnnBMX is ฟอนต์ลายมือเด็กอนุบาล วัยกำลังหัดขี่จักรยานเลย, kindergarten handwriting at bicycle-learning age. iannnnnTKO is ฟอนต์เจ็บ!, a comic impact face. On iannnnnSME the designer admits the name is arbitrary — “นึกชื่อไม่ออกเลยเอาชื่อคล้ายๆ กันนี่แหละ”, he could not think of one so he reused something close. And iannnnnITV is named for a letterform: “ตั้วชื่อว่า I เพราะตัว I มันยาวดี”.
HBO has none of that. It is a gap in the record, and a page that fills it with a confident story about cable television is guessing.
The file you download today is not the January 2005 original
The release page lists iannnnnHBO as 19 January 2005, but the TTF in the current archive reports head.created 25 September 2005 and head.modified 28 September 2005 — eight months after the listing. The version string reads Version 2.000 2005 initial release, and every other file in the 2005 run except iannnnnTKO shows the same autumn timestamps — all eighteen of them created between 20 September and 4 November 2005.
The designer confirms a revision pass, on the iannnnnISO page from the following year:
ป.ล. ใครเคยโหลดฟอนต์ไอ้แอนนนนน (2005) ไป ผมอัปเกรดและแก้ไขตำหนิมันเมื่อ 20 พ.ย.48 ครับ ดังนั้นตัวไหนที่โหลดไปก่อนอาจจะมีไม่สมบูรณ์อยู่บ้าง ยังไงลบของเก่าทิ้งไปแล้วดูดของใหม่เข้าไปแทนโลด !!
(“PS: anyone who downloaded the iannnnn 2005 fonts — I upgraded them and fixed their flaws on 20 November 2548. So whichever ones you took earlier may be somewhat incomplete. Delete the old ones and suck down the new ones instead.”)
We publish both dates rather than reconciling them, because they do not agree. พ.ศ. 2548 is 2005, so his announced fix-up is 20 November 2005, while the HBO file’s own timestamps are late September. Either the files were rebuilt more than once that autumn, or a timestamp was not rewritten. The user-facing conclusion is unaffected: what f0nt.com serves today is a rebuilt file, not the January original, and if you are carrying an old copy in a font folder the designer’s own instruction is to replace it.
The licence, in plain terms
iannnnnHBO is free to download and free to use commercially. The release page carries f0nt.com’s ใช้งานเชิงพาณิชย์ได้ฟรี badge twice, and the site licence answers the commercial question with “ได้จ้ะ เอาเลย” — go right ahead. The grant itself reads:
(“You may download the fonts and use them free of charge. But where the font’s owner sets out any other terms — shown on the font’s download page, or as a document file attached to the font — those terms take precedence.”)
We checked the precedence clause rather than assuming it was moot: the download page states no extra terms beyond the badge, and the archive contains no licence document. The zip is 49,089 bytes and holds one file, 2005_iannnnnHBO.ttf, and nothing else. So the site default governs.
Three restrictions are real, and they are tighter than the SIL Open Font License that covers most free Thai fonts:
- You may not sell the font file. Bundling it with a deliverable so the work renders correctly is expressly permitted; selling the font as the product is not.
- You may not re-host it. The FAQ answers that “ไม่ได้จ้ะ”. Descriptions and specimen images may be republished with attribution and a link back to the download page — which is why our download button points at f0nt.com and never at a mirror.
- Modifying for redistribution needs permission. Private modification is allowed; modifying it to pass on to others requires the owner’s consent.
There is a contradiction inside the file that you should know about before someone else finds it. The embedded nameID 13 licence string reads For educations used only., which is the opposite of the site’s commercial grant. That string is template boilerplate — nameID 10 in the same file credits NP NaipolTemplate : Version 2.000, and the string travels with the template, not with this designer’s intent. The rights holder is also the operator of the distribution channel, and his current bio on every release page reads “ฟอนต์จาก iannnnn แจกฟรีตลอดไป เอาไปใช้ทำมาหากินได้เลยครับ” — iannnnn fonts are free forever, go ahead and use them to make a living. The publisher’s current explicit grant governs; the embedded string is stale 2005 metadata. The Thai font licensing guide sets out how the tiers differ across Thai type generally.
Embedding permission is unambiguous: fsType is 8, editable embedding, so document embedding and webfont conversion are allowed at the binary level.
Where to download iannnnnHBO
Take it from the iannnnnHBO release page on f0nt.com. That is the only source the licence permits and the only one serving the rebuilt file. Use the download button on the page rather than a direct link to the archive. Not because the endpoint stops you — we checked on 29 August 2026 and it serves the zip to a bare request with no Referer and no browser User-Agent — but because the f0nt.com licence forbids re-hosting the files, and the redirect target is an undocumented path that can move without notice.
What you get is one zip holding one TrueType file. There is no OTF, no variable version, no webfont build and no second weight. If you need .woff2, you are converting it yourself, which fsType 8 permits.
Aggregator sites mirror this font. Two reasons to avoid them: re-hosting is expressly forbidden by the licence, and the copies in circulation are often the pre-rebuild January 2005 file the designer asked people to delete.
What to pair with iannnnnHBO
HBO is the rare handwriting face in this series that can carry short text, so pair it for contrast at the top of the page rather than for rescue at the bottom. Three that work:
- Sarabun — the open-licence Thai body standard. Use it under HBO when the document needs a real weight range, or over it when HBO is doing captions and annotations.
- Anuphan — a contemporary loopless sans. Setting a loopless heading over HBO’s looped hand makes the handwriting read as deliberate rather than default.
- iannnnnDVD — same designer, same day, same template, opposite temperament. DVD for the headline, HBO for the body, and the whole page still speaks in one person’s hand.
Across the wider category — see handwritten Thai fonts — HBO sits at the composed, legible end, which is a thinner field than the loose end.
Briefs it suits: worksheets and educational material, personal and craft branding, packaging with a handmade register, annotation layers on diagrams and maps, and anything where the handwriting has to be read rather than admired. Briefs it does not: long-form body text, interface type, and any layout that needs a bold — there isn’t one.
iannnnnHBO, the animal series, and the 2005 context
The 2005 fonts and the animal series most people meet first are twenty years and one technical era apart. ThaiGraph publishes iannnnn-HEN and iannnnn-DOG from the later run: multi-weight families with modern outlines and clean release terms. The 2005 files are single-weight, template-built and carry the fixed mark geometry described above.
The link between the two eras is documented, not inferred. On the iannnnnGMO page the designer says he was trying to make something as good as CordiaUPC Bold, and adds that GMO’s 2025 successor is iannnnn-HEN — so the animal series continues this work by the same hand. The full record of all seventeen 2005 releases, with listed dates, download counts and licence terms, is on the iannnnn foundry hub.
For where a one-man free catalogue sits against the commercial Thai foundries, see the Thai type foundries guide. And if a self-taught second font reaching 425,000 downloads makes the idea seem approachable — it is; how to make a Thai font covers the routes available now.
Name variants and spellings
These all point at the same typeface, and any of them should land you here:
- iannnnnHBO — the name on the release page and in the font’s own name table
- iannnnn HBO / iannnnn-HBO — spaced and hyphenated forms; the 2005 series is closed up, the later animal series is hyphenated
- 2005_iannnnnHBO — the filename, and the family name stored inside the TTF
- ฟอนต์ iannnnnHBO — the Thai-language search
- ไอ้แอนนนนน HBO — the Thai reading of the handle, from the designer’s old site name
- iannnnnHBO font download / โหลดฟอนต์ iannnnnHBO — the release page is the download page
- iannnnn 5 / iannnnn5 — a common miscount; the handle has exactly five n’s
There is no bold, italic, condensed or variable cut of this face. A download promising “iannnnnHBO Bold” did not come from the designer.
Frequently asked questions about iannnnnHBO
Is iannnnnHBO free for commercial use?
Yes — iannnnnHBO is free for both personal and commercial use. You can use it in client work, apps, products, and websites at no cost, and self-host or embed it. The only OFL condition is that you don’t sell the font files on their own.
